Background of the Study

Government-owned media outlets in Nigeria, such as state-run television and radio stations, play a crucial role in disseminating information to the public. These media outlets, especially in regions like Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, are often relied upon for official announcements, public service information, and government policies. However, public trust in these platforms can be compromised when the media is perceived as biased, serving political interests, or failing to hold the government accountable.

Public trust in media is essential for a healthy democracy, as the media is expected to act as a watchdog, offering independent and reliable information to the public. In the case of government-owned media, however, this role can become complicated. Media outlets that are funded and controlled by the government may face challenges in maintaining impartiality, especially when reporting on the very government that funds them. This study seeks to investigate the level of public trust in government-owned media in Dutse, exploring factors such as perceived bias, credibility, and the role of these media outlets in shaping public opinion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Dutse, public trust in government-owned media outlets is often questioned due to concerns about bias and government influence over editorial content. People may view these media outlets as tools for government propaganda, leading to skepticism about the reliability of the information they provide. This lack of trust undermines the effectiveness of government-owned media in promoting public awareness and fostering a well-informed citizenry. Despite the critical role of government-owned media, little research has been conducted to explore how these platforms are perceived by the public in terms of trustworthiness and credibility. This study aims to investigate the factors that influence public trust in government-owned media in Dutse, Jigawa State, and how this trust, or lack thereof, affects media consumption behaviors.
